Final Submission - Strategy Statement
For assignment 02, I am modelling and decaying the Church of Light by Tadao Ando. I have modelled this building in 3Ds Max and then placed it into my CryEngine environment from assignment 01.
In order for the building to sit well in the landscape I had to alter the terrain. I decided to place the building at the top of the island next to a small lake that then cascades over the edge of a cliff. I had to smooth some of the landscape in this location and also raise and lower the terrain in certain areas when the model was imported to make the land level with the door openings and the steps.
The primary element of the building that is failing as time goes on is the concrete. Some of the concrete panels have come off due to the steel structure rusting. This leaves a considerable amount of steel work exposed.
In order to convey the idea of human occupation in the building, I have placed a book on the table at the front of the church. This idea of human occupancy and destruction can be seen more clearly when the building is decayed as there are subtle hints of graffiti and many of the pews inside the church are upturned as if there was a violent event that took place inside the church.
I have made the building decay interactively through the use of flow graphs. A section of the wall collapses as the camera and viewer pass by the side of the church.

Week 13 - Lecture Summary
This week we looked at how textures can be used to create the impression that the building has been decaying for 100 years.
I believe that these programs is where the future of architecture lies. I think that the role of an architect has changed from 2D drafting to 3D modelling and will continue to change and evolve to environments that you can walk around the architecture as we have done in this assignment.
We also looked at the peeling paint tutorial in the lecture. This was the outcome when I tried this tutorial:

Week 12 - Movie Trailers
"Contagion" - 2011
As the title states, this movie is based on a contagious disease that spreads around the world very quickly.
I plan to make this the reason for the lack of humans living 100 years into the future.
"2012" - 2009
I like the idea of having text flashing up on the screen in order to give the audience an idea of the plot line.
"28 Days Later" - 2002
Similar idea to 2012 with the use of text to convey the story. 28 Days Later, however, does this in such a way, with quick shots of film cut between text, that makes the film appear scarier.
"Life Of Pi" - 2012
This trailer uses shots of the islands and the ocean to set the scene. I think I will use shots of the building from further away in order to show context.
"Cloud Atlas" - 2012
I like the use of piano in this trailer that then blends into a more modern track by M83.

Week 12 - Lecture Summary
This week in the lecture we looked at photographs of buildings that had been abandoned after natural or man made disasters. I found the images of Kolmanskop, Namibia really interesting especially how the sand had settled inside the buildings. We also looked at apocalyptic movie trailers such as I Am Legend. Watching these trailers made me start thinking about how I could show the Church of Light in an abandoned state.

Week 11 - Lecture Summary
This week in the lecture, we looked at the destruction of buildings both by nature and by man. One of the most interesting case studies we looked at was the Christchurch earthquake. As the Christchurch area was not considered very earthquake prone, the buildings weren't built to withstand the forces of such a large earthquake. It was interesting to see how the buildings were after the earthquake and the damage that this natural disaster had made. I think for my project, I will destroy my building as if it had been in an earthquake. I will then use vegetation and other methods to show that there has been little or no human maintenance on the building since the earthquake.

Week 10 - Lecture Summary
This week there was no lecture. During the tutorial we went to the library and researched details that are relevant for our specific building. I am doing the Church of Light, so I was looking at concrete details as well as floor and window details.

Week 8 - Glass Research
- Although glass is brittle, it is extremely durable and can be moulded into any shape.
- Glass doesn’t really decay; instead it crystallises, weathers and erodes. The rate of crystalisation is depended on many factors, most importantly temperature.
- If glass is in the ocean for a prolonged period of time, its edges will go smooth from erosion.
- The melting point of glass is between 800 and 950 degrees Celsius. In extreme heat, glass will become soft and increasingly liquid.
- Spalling of glass is created by rapid cooling such as the application of water. This causes small close cracks.
Week 8 - Timber Research
- Timber has superior strength qualities and can withstand some of the most extreme weather.
- Timber will rot and mould will form if there is wet weather.
- Timber buildings will be quick to disappear if the buildings were left to the environment.
- In fire, timber will burn quickly causing the structural frame to fail and the building to fall. After the fire, timber will be blackened and there will be bits of timber and ash on the floor.
Week 8 - Concrete Research
- Concrete is commonly made of a mixture of powdered cement, water, sand and gravel.
- Reinforced concrete is a composite material in which the concrete’s relatively low tensile strength and ductility are counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement having higher tensile strength and/or ductility.
- Reinforcement is usually steel bars that are embedded in the concrete.
- The chemical environment of the hardened concrete causes a film to form on the surface of the steel reinforcement, making it more resistant to corrosion.
- When the steel reinforcements do begin to rust, the rust expands and tends to flake, causing the concrete to crack and the bond between concrete and steel to break.
- Cracking can allow moisture into the concrete also causing the reinforcement to rust.
- Without maintenance, concrete will begin to decay and get damaged after 20 years, as can be seen from the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine. Plant root systems will begin to get into the concrete and break up the structure.
- In fire, concrete peels away layer by layer. As water is pulled out of the concrete from the heat of the fire, thin layers of concrete with the aggregates visible, begin to fall off the wall.

Week 8 - Lecture Summary
This week in the lecture we began by looking at some of the experiment 01 submissions. Russell spoke about the things that worked well and things that didn't work well in each trailer. He particularly spoke about editing and how the island looked when you looked at it from far away.
We then talked about how different materials are made, e.g. concrete, and how their formation and their construction can shape the way in which the material decays.

week 7 - Sao Paulo Museum
Is primarily constructed of glass and concrete. The building is supported by two main concrete columns, elevating the building off the ground. These columns could potentially crack due to vegetation, weathering and eroding resulting in the possibility of the building falling down at some points.
Week 7 - 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art by SANAA has glass running around the edge of the building creating a connection between the inside of the building and its context. If the building were to decay, this glass would crack and shatter allowing the vegetation easier access to the inside of the building. As there are internal courtyards in this building, I think vegetation would cause the most damage if the building were left to the elements for an extended period of time.
Week 7 - Church of Light
The Church of Light by Tadao Ando is primarily constructed of concrete and glass. There is a small gap between the slabs of concrete running around the whole perimeter of the church at a height of 3.95 metres. The small gap aligns with the horizontal axis of the large cross and could be the perfect site either for cracking or for vegetation to begin to grow. The floor is made from recycled timber which would be prone to rotting.
Week 7 - Lecture Summary
This week in the lecture we primarily looked at the buildings we can incorporate in to our CryEngine island environments. We also began to explore how buildings would decay over time if people weren't around to provide the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings.
We watch short clips from the TV series 'Life After Humans' which allowed us to grasp a greater understanding about the appearance of the buildings if they were left to the elements for several years. I think this lecture got everyone to begin to think about how they are going to decay their building. The lecture also provided us with some inspiration as to how to best go about doing this project.

Week 6 - Lecture Summary
This week in the lecture, we focused on trailers for both movies and games. We particularly looked at the music and how this accentuated the visual elements of the trailer.
The first trailers made were silent and introduced each character and explained the plot line. As time went on, the trailers told less of the story rather conveying a feeling, mood and atmosphere.
Looking at some trailers and examining the positives and negatives of each and the impact they have on the audience allowed me to make an informed decision on what type of trailer I wanted and the best way to display my island.

Week 5 - Strategy
In my island I am revealing and concealing the letter-number combination 'K-9'. This will be done on a variety of scales ranging from macro to micro. On the macro scale, I have constructed my entire island in the shape of a 'k' with 9 rock stacks off to the side of the island.
On the micro scale, I have used patterns in the environment textures and materials as well as having 9 frogs in the environment.

Week 5 - Lecture Summary
This week we focused on subliminal stimuli. We looked at and discussed constructing elements in our islands that the viewer and user will not be consciously aware of. We looked at artists such as Edward Bernays who demonstrates concepts like these. In our islands we will construct subliminal stimuli in the form of a letter number combination. We looked at creating these subliminal stimuli on several different scales ranging from macro to micro.

Week 4 - Lecture Summary
This
week we looked at drama, weather and lighting. We focus primarily on the
sublime and how altering the weather and lighting in a scene can have a big
impact. We looked at artists such as James Ward and Caspar David who use
weather, lighting and specific views to create drama and a scene that is
realistic however makes you question its reality.
